Chapter Thirteen

Casper

The weight of responsibility for a teammate’s safety fell squarely on Casper’s shoulders now that she considered herself part of a team of two. Not for the first time, she understood what Kiera endured when leading others on missions.

Under normal circumstances, and if alone, she’d waltz into Frederick’s home, find the evidence needed, then call the authorities. She could phase her way through any booby traps and be out in time for her next meal.

The resolve to stay focused and get the job done remained forefront in her thoughts. Her penchant for getting distracted had decreased with practice, and her observational skills had improved, which lessened her vulnerability.

Without her Pennsylvania team for backup, everything changed. A side-glance at Hailey revealed her new friend equally deep in thoughts as she drove.

A conversation with the spirit of Hailey’s sister yielded a goldmine of information. Not only was Addy able to form a loose connection with two of the murdered gang members, she’d also offered insight into Hailey’s future.

It bugged the hell out of her when the spirit wouldn’t divulge more—like how she knew this, was it fact or intuition? Perhaps if alive, Addy would’ve been a seer.

According to the spirit, Hailey would be powerful. To date, only a fraction of her abilities had manifested.

Cool wind blew in through the open window, reminiscent of years prior when her adopted parents drove her to school, back before men with guns wanted to study then kill her.

Watching the raw land pass by her window, she wondered if her life would ever feel normal again, or if the current situation comprised the newest version.

“You’re awful quiet, Hailey. Having second thoughts?”

“About calling out and taunting a serial killer? Heavens no. Do it all the time.” Her gaze remained locked on the road despite the sarcasm and grin.

“At least I’m not cracking jokes about crypts and corpses. I’m wondering if Leigh is ever gonna let that go.” Casper didn’t have the heart to reference her partner’s near-death experience again. It hit too close to home.

“Because you’ve seen death, too. Up close and personal. You’re young, but in experience, much older than anyone I know.”

“More than you could ever imagine. There’s a whole other world most people never see. In the past year, we’ve taken down an organization who imprisoned psychically talented kids after killing their parents, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. There were three facilities we raided and released those who’d been poked and prodded, some to death.”

“What? Is that what I saw when I touched you?”

“Yeah, we’ve fought assassins, mercenaries with and without talent, and a psychopath bent on enslaving mankind.”

“I guess every culture has their share of nuts.”

“Along the way, we got help from shifters and those from the spirit realm. So, yeah, I guess I have seen a lot, but I’m ready to settle down, at least for a while. I want to learn about my roots. I know my parents are dead, and I’m guessing have moved on. I can’t call them to me because I don’t have a name or even a mental picture of them.
